Mauston - Juneau County's hub city

Taken just steps from city hall and the police station, this picture shows a
beautiful sunset off the Lemonweir River branching off of Lake Decorah

With a population hovering around 4000 at any given time, Mauston is Juneau County's hub city - the county seat. Even so, Mauston is still a quaint rural river town where during hunting and harvest season it may be difficult to find someone in their offices, as those basic and simple ways are still very much part of life in the area.

Easily accessible off of the 90/94 intrastate - Mauston is the gateway to many of Juneau County's attractions including shopping, dining, and camping adventures at one of the many privately owned grounds and resorts, as well as the county, and state owned parks like Buckhorn State Park  and the county owned Castle Rock Lake County Park

Just recently the city has approved an ATV trail on the northeast side of town to connect to other trails that one day hope to provide a linkage in a route that would run from Mauston up through to Blackriver Falls, WI.

Housed in Mauston in a historic building known as the Boorman House, is the county's history which the Juneau County Historical Society has worked tirelessly on preserving for generations to come. The Boorman House is open to the public on weekends from Memorial Day through Labor Day, and then again on special occasions during the off seasons, including the much anticipated annual Holiday Open House event which starts around the end of November and runs two weekends in a row.

The Historical Society also owns Stewart's Chapel which is in rural Mauston off of County Hwy O - once a year at the chapel the group holds a community potluck lunch, and have just recently began holding a once a year rummage sale on the property.

Mauston is also home of the county fairgrounds now known at Veteran's Park - the fair runs during mid August and boasts many vendors, along with competitions, food, entertainment and other events.

During the colder months residents of Mauston tend not to hibernate as there are many activities to take part including the Mauston Pumpkin Bash, held on a weekend near the end of October has become a much anticipated event -

In December crowds brave bitter cold temperatures to watch the annual holiday parade which is held in the evening hours to highlight the twinkling lights signifying the season.

The Canadian Pacific Holiday Train has made Mauston one of their official stops on their route throughout the upper part of the USA and lower regions of Canada.  Yet, again, another much anticipated event and one which benefits the area food pantry.

Whether it's is shopping, camping, dining, playing, hunting or even fishing and boating - there's plenty to do in and around Mauston - Juneau County's hub city!

Close to the Wisconsin Dells, but far from the traffic and crowds
